Now Playing: February
February 1st // "Happiness is a Butterfly" - Lana Del Rey
I still remember hearing this track for the first time when the album came out. The verse "The bar was hot, it's 2am, it feels like summer", is so stunning. Her voice is so light and makes such a simple lyric stand out each time I listen. The entire theme of this track is bittersweet in the sense that happiness is so fleeting and you never truly catch it. "Happiness is a butterfly, try to catch it like every night. It escapes from my hands into moonlight", this is just so stunning. The production makes me forget Jack Antonoff makes music with Taylor Swift. I have been trying to come up with a tattoo for almost 6 years and I think this song is the one for me. I literally had to make a reddit post about this song because I could not go on. (2019)
February 2nd // "Why Are Sundays so Depressing?" - The Strokes
I listen to this first thing every Sunday on my way to work <3 I got into this band so late, but now I'm begging to see them on another festival lineup in the future. I am late to almost every alternative rock band, and I think deep down I'm sad I didn't make an effort to see these bands a couple years ago when they were touring. There is so much music in the world....(2020)
February 3rd // "Praise The Lord (Da Shine)" - ASAP rocky
I love this song so bad. This beat is so nasty; I rarely say that, but Jesus Christ. I truly have no feelings towards him aside from the memory of me being paraphernalia into the venue and smoking weed at his show….would never do that again, but that concert was so fucking fun. I listened to this 9 times on repeat at the office today. There is something so crazy about this beat; truly his best song. The album always takes me back to high school. (2018)
February 4th // "The Scientist (Live In Buenos Aires)" - Coldplay
I feel like I listened to this for the first time and actually understood the depth of these lyrics. "Come back and haunt me" is so devastating. This song specifically gives me chills as a live track. I can’t imagine the feeling of the band in the moment when the crowd sings along at the end of the song. It’s known that Brazil brings the best crowds to live shows; I’m convinced they know every artist to ever exist. I just love the shows Coldplay puts on. I’m actively trying to get tickets to their show at Nissan Stadium, but they’re so much money….TikTok ruined everything. (2017)
February 5th // "Comfortably Numb (Live at Pompeii)" - David Gilmour (lyrics by Roger Waters)
If you could see my music library you would see all 1,000 versions of this song available there. When this track clicked for me during quarantine, it REALLY clicked. A memory I will never forget is being so excited to show my friend this song when she told me she was getting into rock music, and then after it finished told me she was more into Olivia Rodrigo-rock. I fell hard that day, but I know everything is subjective. I think this live version is my all-time favorite; I can sing the guitar solo like it's actual lyrics. I just love when music transports you to another place. I am not too sure how I interpret this song right now, but catch up with me in a couple more years. (1979)
February 6th // "The Love Club" - Lorde
Jesus Christ her music is so timeless...my famous quote with Lorde is, "she was 15". She is so stunning. I feel so inspired whenever I listen to her; I feel like I can see her career in 20+ years being as celebrated as Joni Mitchell. (2013)
February 7th // "Bartender" - Lana Del Rey
This feels like I'm listening to a lullaby. It's full of such artistic lore; few know what I mean. "60 mph, on PCH drive", oh my fucking god. I cannot get enough of this record, I need it put into my veins like an IV. I have been reading her fan posts recently and the discussion of Norman being Lana Del Rey's "final" album keeps me up at night. There are so many artists who formed a persona behind a stage name and inevitably they all return to their root identity. I think it is so inappropriate to decide something like that for an artist; however, she released two follow up records that were closer to her "Lizzy Grant" identity, so I can understand the idea. I love my girl forever! (2017)
February 8th // "Fireproof" - One Direction
This was the first song of theirs to come on shuffle after Liam's passing and coincidentally, this is one of the songs he wrote. This song will always be in my top 5 of their discography. (2014)
February 9th // “Mais Que Nada” - Sergio Mendes
My supervisor was playing this bossa nova song one day that I added to my phone; I explored the artist and discovered they made the RIO soundtrack…how fucking crazy is that. If you know me, you know how cool this is for me. This is just another small piece of music history that makes me fall in love even more. I love stumbling upon things like this most of all. Sergio Mendes did a collaborative album with will.i.am and it might be the greatest album I have ever heard. I welcome and appreciate all types of music. (1966)
February 10th // “What Is Love?” - Haddaway
For some reason my sister and I were raised on 90s dance music, so this brought back so many memories!! It goes crazy even in 2025; I got my sister to add it to her wedding playlist. I also learned that this is the top dance song to come from an artist out of Germany...iconic. (1993)
February 11th // “Abracadabra” - Lady Gaga
OHHHHHHHHH we are so back!!! This music video screams old Lady Gaga. When it hits the bridge at minute 2:50 my body floats away. I am so excited for this album. Mother Monster is so back. (2025)
February 12th // “Not Like Us” - Kendrick Lamar
I am ashamed to say this song did not click for me until he won at The Grammys...the entire idea behind this song is hilarious enough for me to let it slide that Good Luck Babe! did not win in leiu of it that night. (2024)
February 13th // “Pretty Pictures” - Indigo De Sueza
I got reminded of this song again when I was driving down the highway; it just crashed into my head. I unfortunately haven't heard another one of her songs that makes me feel like this one does, but alas! There are plenty of years to come! (2021)
February 14th // “Novacane” - Frank Ocean
I could go on and on about this man - he is a genius. When I was at home during lockdown, my friend and I discovered this podcast called Dissect. The man who runs it heavily researches and breaks down hip-hop albums, and opened my eyes to the world of Frank Ocean. The title of this song alone has three different spellings...I can't even begin to tell you the backstory, but I think about that time, getting high in our cars, listening to Frank. (2011)
February15th // "Open Heart" - The Weeknd
I literally see visions in my head listening to this. I can picture a music video perfectly. I have been listening to this non-stop since the album dropped; I want to see him live again sooooooo badly. I am so anxious about what his music will sound like with his next project not under "The Weeknd" personality. I read something so interesting on reddit about how artists that feel like they can only succeed under an alter ego, always return to the sound they started out with (Lana, Lady Gaga, etc). I hope he returns to a similar sound of his debut. (2025)
February 16th // "Mystery Of love" - Sufjan Stevens
If I were having a wedding I would walk down the aisle to this. I saw a video a long time ago, explaining why "Cherry" by Harry Styles was so sad, and it explained it was the way 2 chords overlapped at different pitches. I am explaining it horribly, but in my brain I see a roller coaster cart going up in one guitar, and down on another. "Merry Go' Round" by Kacey Musgraves leaves the same effect on me, and I can never fully describe why these songs are so sad. This song for example, isn't sad. Anyways, I'm not doing anything if someone wants to propose to me. (2017)
February 17th // "Waiting Room" - Phoebe Bridgers
This song makes me feel like a little girl again. (2016)
February 18th // "Marvins Room" - Drake
There is nothing like this album....this is what I wish he would go back to. Also for those that do not know, The Weeknd helped write so many of the songs on Take Care and I wonder if that is what made it so great. (2011)
February 19th // “Nothing Else Matters” - Metallica
This is probably the only Metallica song I know and I don't care! Every version of it is flawless. I think I have every version of this song saved to my phone. I am so obsessed with heavy metal bands doing ballads because they're usually insanely good. Miley Cyrus and Phoebe Bridgers both did covers on their massive compilation The Metallica Blacklist, and both versions are so different, but work so well with their voices. The rock sound is so diverse; the gift that keeps on giving. (1991)
February 20th // “Silent Running" - Gorillaz
This is too good. I keep discovering new Gorillaz songs I love! They have so many albums I'm a little hesitant to dive right in when I have other commitments to focus on....I am doing a project for my internship right now however, so I am all over their early performances when they were still being broadcast as the animated characters live! An insane way to perform before holograms were being used to resurrect artists that didn't ask for it. (2023)
February 21st // "Devil's In The Details" - REAVE
Yes, I am late, but they are so back! If you have been in my car, then you have heard me play "Get to Know You" by this same group, and THEY'RE BACK! This roaring, synth masterpiece is so good. "You always told me that you got me. I started questioning how." I mean....yea. I hope, hope, hope they make their way across the pond to America for some live shows in the near future. (2024)
February 22nd // "Stay Baby" - Geowulf
This reminds me of so many things when I listen to it....I have not heard any other music by this artist, but I will 100% be following along their journey; I know she just dropped her debut in January. It sounds like a giant mix of every artist I love, and the sounds I love rolled up into one. And who doesn't fucking love a beat switch in a song? (2025)
February 23rd // “Night Shift” - Lucy Dacus
I got reminded about this song in the bathroom of the bar! Her voice is so crystal clear, stunning, gorgeous, perfect. The entire structure of the song is so pleasing to me because right when you're ready to skip, it shifts so quickly into the greatest outro she could have ever done. I have been saying I need to take a deep dive into her work, and hopefully it really is soon. (2018)
February 24th // "Pumped Up Kicks" - Foster The People
I am soooooooo excited for Bonnaroo. (2010)
February 25th // "Peaches" - In The Valley Below
Forever my favorite song of all time. It randomly came on shuffle after maybe 2 years without hearing it, and I rolled my windows down, stuck my foot out the window, and felt free! (2013)
February 26th // “White Flag” - Dido
Wowwwwww. I don't think I went a day without listening to this song this week. Her acoustic version of this is stunning too; of course her voice live is just like her studio work. I probably sent this to everyone I knew when I first heard it. (2003)
February 27th // “I’m With You” - Avril Lavigne
I was going through her music again to re-fresh before Bonnaroo and I must have heard it when I was young because it was the most familiar to me of them all. I think I found my new karaoke song for sure. Her live vocals, even now, are insanely good. She did an acoustic performance of this song with YUNGBLUD that is absolutely perfect....I also realized this is the song sampled in Rihannas "Cheers (Drink To That); how fucking sick. (2022)
February 28th // "That Funny Feeling" - Bo Burnam
I hate to compliment a man, but this entire song is perfect. The up & down feelings that you experience with lyrics like "the whole world at your fingertips, the ocean at your door", are diabolical. This entire project being created during quarantine is just so interesting to me. I know it's a comedy album, but I hold this to the same regard as Folklore in the sense that a really confusing time period could be interpreted in a way people needed. Not to mention, the cover Phoebe Bridgers did of this song exists in my mind all the fucking time. The video of her singing this on tour with Bo in the audience always makes me think about having the courage to share your creativity with literally anyone. (2020)
